Seleus game reserve is a protected area in southern Tanzania. It covers a total area of 50000sq km and has additional buffer zone. It was designated a UNESCO World heritage site in 1982 due to its wildlife diversity and undisturbed natures.
Seleus game reserve is known in swahili as ” shamba la bibi” which means ” women’s garden’. This is a beautifully destination for the visitors which is located in southern circuit of Tanzania, this area has covered with many huge numbers of several different species of wilderness creatures like ” Large number of bird’s species, large groups of Buffalo, Hippopotamus, Lions, Elephants and the endangered African hunting dog, and this is a single reserve anywhere in a world to have these largest numbers of several species of animals and over ( 440) species of birds.
Seleus game reserve is a only wildlife destination where you can enjoy the chance of ‘ game hunting, Boating and fishing activities as well as game driving to enjoy the wildlife of the area. Interesting place in the park include the RUFIJI RIVER, which flows into INDIAN OCEAN opposite MAFIA ISLAND and Stiegler Gorge. Although total wildlife population are high, the reserve is large and densities of animals are lower in the more regularly visited Northern tourist circuit of Tanzania.
In 1976, the Seleus game reserve contained about 109000 Elephants, then the largest population in the world. By 2013, the number had dropped down to about 13000 – including 66% drop from 2009 to 2013. Sources blame corrupt politicians, officials and businessmen who helped poachers.
Most of reserve remains set aside for game hunting through a number of privately leased hunting concessions, but the section of the northern park along the RUFIJI RIVER has been designated a photographic zone and is a popular tourist destination.
There are several high end Lodges and Camps mainly situated along the river and lake system in this area. Rather difficult road access means most visitors arrive from small Aircraft from DAR ES SALAAM, through train access is also possible .
Walking safari are permitted in seleus game reserve , and Boating activity in Rufiji river are the popular activities.
